The association for open encounters and integration through language (Vobis) is a Carinthian association that takes care of asylum seekers . The association, founded in January 2008, has set itself the task of enabling asylum seekers to learn the German language with volunteers.

history

From November 2007 a pilot project was started in two Carinthian refugee boarding houses with three-month lessons. Due to the resulting success, the Vobis association was officially established in January 2008. The first German courses took place in March of the same year and have taken place every semester since then. At the end of this first semester, a multicultural summer festival took place at the University of Klagenfurt in cooperation with the VSSTÖ . Shortly afterwards the association was accepted into the “Action Committee for More Humanity and Tolerance in Carinthia”. A separate office was opened in Klagenfurt in November 2008 .

Since the beginning of 2009 the association has also been a member of the regional poverty conference in Carinthia. In February of the same year, Vobis took 3rd place in the social award for helping hands from the city of Klagenfurt. In cooperation with the Slovenian cultural association Rož , the benefit concert Integrationsfešta Heimat-Los / Srečo-Lov was organized a little later . As part of the 3rd place at the Viennese social award SozialMarie in May 2009, the cabaret artist Michael Niavarani takes over the “honorary protection” of the Vobis association for one year.

In June 2009 a children's drawing exhibition of refugee children took place at the University of Klagenfurt, with the support of Klaus Ottomeyer as part of the annual summer festival. This was followed by intensive German courses for a group of unaccompanied minor refugees . This summer break in 2009 ended with the performance of the play “Frederik” in Villach , which was made possible by children and their mothers (asylum seekers) from four different countries.

In October 2009, Carinthian asylum seekers took part in the long night of the museums in Klagenfurt with a specially set up choir. In December of that year occurred in Velden of charity appearance of Michael Niavarani.

As the only Carinthian initiative, Vobis was awarded the European Language Innovation Seal 2010 by the Austrian Language Competence Center and can henceforth bear the ESIS seal.

The association and its volunteer members were honored together with Krassimira Dimova, from St. Jakob im Rosental, for their commitment with the Carinthian Human Rights Prize 2010.

Activity and goal

The purpose of the association is to improve the living conditions of asylum seekers in Carinthia. The association offers voluntary German courses in order to make life in Austria easier for those affected . Vobis developed several courses that were tailored to the age group, which means that integration is possible for all age groups. The courses also differ in level. In order to enable asylum seekers to take part, the German courses usually take place on site in the refugee pensions. In addition, there are childcare facilities in the large pensions during the German course. There are two courses per year, which are therefore divided into two semesters, from March to June and from October to January.

At the beginning of each semester, new employees are always sought, for whom an extensive introductory event should give them an insight into the basics of didactics and work with refugees who are sometimes very traumatized. After starting school, teams of around two to four people supervise one of the weekly German courses in one of the refugee boarding houses.

Since November 2008 there is an office in Klagenfurt . In addition to an administration center, it serves as a contact point for all employees and interested parties. The refugees can also use the internet here . Another point of contact for asylum seekers is the Vobis course in the Diocesan House in Klagenfurt. There are weekly parallel courses of various levels take place there. The association newspaper Quo Vobis has been published since April 2009 to provide information to the outside world , in which information about the association as well as the fate of refugees is presented.

The association is financed exclusively through membership fees, donations in kind and money as well as the income from individual charity events.
