The United Hagelversicherung VVaG emerged in 1993 through the merger of the two previous German market leaders, Norddeutsche Hagelversicherung VVaG and Leipziger Hagel VVaG (founded in 1824). According to the statutes, the object and purpose of the association is to insure its members against property damage (loss of income) in the area of the production of agricultural and horticultural products, in particular from hail and other natural hazards. Policyholders are farmers , gardeners , vintners , hop growers , and fruit and vegetable growers . In Germany around 60 percent of the agricultural areas insured against hail damage are insured by the United Hagel.

The United Hagelversicherung VVaG insures around 5.3 million hectares of agricultural and horticultural area across Europe with a risk volume of 9.4 billion euros (2017) and is therefore both German and European market leader. Around 1,000 experts, 2,000 agents and 70 sales representatives work for the company. In addition to the German business focus , the insurance association also offers insurance cover in Denmark , Italy , Lithuania , Latvia, Luxembourg , Belgium, the Netherlands , Croatia and Poland .

Together with Gartenbau-Versicherung VVaG in Wiesbaden, Vereinigte Hagelversicherung VVaG forms the AgroRisk Group with mutual reinsurance contracts and other holdings. AGRO-EDV Rechenzentrum GmbH is a 100% subsidiary of Vereinigte Hagelversicherung VVaG.

With Secufarm Garant, Vereinigte Hagel added the option of individually selectable iModules to its successful Secufarm product line in 2018, which members can use to adapt their insurance to the specific circumstances of the individual company.

Supervisory board

The supervisory board consists of 15 members and is elected by the members' delegates in the general assembly. The chairman of the supervisory board is Klaus Mugele, a farmer in Baden-Württemberg. The delegates are elected by around 100,000 members who are organized in 63 district associations.
