The Association of Islamic Organizations in Zurich (VIOZ) was founded in 1995 and, with over 30 member organizations, is the largest cantonal Islamic umbrella organization in Switzerland. The VIOZ member organizations operate over 40 mosques in the canton of Zurich, which makes up around 90% of all mosques.

The VIOZ works in partnership with the two national associations, the Federation of Islamic Umbrella Organizations in Switzerland (FIDS) and the Coordination of Islamic Organizations Switzerland (KIOS) and has been a member of FIDS since March 2019.

The VIOZ has been the contact for the city and canton of Zurich for many years and advocates the interests of Muslims and their member organizations in the spirit of social consensus.

In addition, VIOZ is in constant contact with state, church and social institutions and is a contributor to the interreligious dialogue in the canton of Zurich.

tasks and goals

In cooperation with the authorities, Muslim grave fields in the canton of Zurich were created in the cities of Zurich and Winterthur. In addition, VIOZ offers voluntary training for mosque tours and was thus able to ensure that tours are carried out by qualified people. The VIOZ has been organizing the "Open Mosque Day" in the canton of Zurich for several years and offers mosque tours for those interested all year round.

With the support of the Canton of Zurich, VIOZ was able to start a 2-year pilot project for a Muslim emergency pastoral care (MNFS) in 2014. In this context, a 24-hour emergency number is offered and Muslim emergency pastoralists are trained in Islamic-specific ( CIG ) and general emergency pastoral care (NNPN).

On July 1, 2016, the one-year pilot project for Muslim pastoral care in Swiss federal asylum centers started in which VIOZ was named as a partner organization by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM). During the pilot phase, Muslim pastors will be employed by the SEM on a contract basis. The applicants recommended to the SEM by VIOZ had to meet a catalog of criteria drawn up by the Swiss national churches and the SEM. The catalog is based on the procedural provisions issued by the prison system of the Canton of Zurich for the admission and withdrawal of prison chaplains. Both the VIOZ and the individuals recommended by it were audited by the Federal Intelligence Service and SEM internally.

In February 2018, the Zurich Directorate of Justice and Home Affairs presented the project "Muslim Hospital and Emergency Pastoral Care" to the public. Together with the VIOZ and with the support of the churches, the canton has set up a sponsorship that provides Muslim pastoral care. The cantonal Directorate of Justice and Home Affairs then awarded a service contract to the sponsor for a project period from 2017 to 2019. In its guiding principles on the relationship between state and religion, the Zurich government council advocates binding forms of cooperation with non-recognized religious communities. The federal government is also dealing with these questions. Together with the cantons and municipalities, he has dealt with, among other things, Muslim pastoral care in the 'National Action Plan' to prevent and combat radicalization and violent extremism (NAP). The NAP calls on the cantons to create appropriate further training opportunities for religiously active caregivers from non-recognized religious communities. Until a possible assignment, the Muslim pastors are checked for their suitability in a multi-stage process. This aptitude assessment includes technical criteria and a security check. The sponsorship has awarded the training contract to the 'Swiss Center for Islam and Society' at the University of Friborg (SZIG).

VIOZ also deals with general social issues and as part of a student internship has given the task of finding out how environmentally conscious its member organizations are, what importance environmentally conscious behavior has in Islam and how one can make Muslims aware of the topic. The result was an environmental brochure that can be accessed online.

In addition to the strategic goals of creating grave fields for the Muslim population, a Zurich central mosque and recognition as a religious community under public law, the subject areas of the VIOZ include youth work, the prevention of extremism and general pastoral care in hospitals, prisons and asylum centers.
