Career

Swimming career

It was not until 1961, at the age of 11, that Eberle began swimming training. In 1964 she won the Bavarian championship title over 200 meters breast. Her first international competitions took place in Oslo , Pressburg , Stockholm , Paris and Budapest , among others .

At the national level, the breakthrough followed in 1968 , when she secured participation in the Summer Olympics in Mexico City by finishing second at the German Championships . The unfamiliar mountain air at the venue could be a reason for the early failure in the heats over 100 meters and 200 meters chest.

In the 1972 Olympic year, she became German champion over 200 meters breast, which qualified her for the summer games in Munich. There she won the bronze medal with the 4 × 100 meter layer relay, behind the GDR and the USA . Eberle was the only relay swimmer who was seeded in the run-up to ensure that the individual relay relay secured eighth place , just a tenth of a second, ahead of the Australians and thus reached the Olympic final. In the individual competition over 100 meters chest she took 6th place in the final. She couldn't get more than 200 meters chest beyond the forerun.

After the Olympic Games in Munich, Verena Eberle ended her active swimming career when she was not yet 22 years old.

For her athletic performance, she was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on September 11, 1972.
