The publishing house Norddeutsche Volksstimme in Bremerhaven - Geestemünde , Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 1 and Elbestraße 52, was built in 1930 based on plans by Gustav Claas.
The house has been a listed building in Bremen since 2014 .

history

The four-storey (plus mezzanine floor ), former publishing and residential building in a good location on what was then Hohenzollernring was built in the style of New Building (also New Objectivity ) in very modern architecture as a printing and editorial building for the social democratic newspaper Norddeutsche Volksstimme. The building was a contrast to the conservatively designed neighboring Reichsbank building. The property cost 20,000 Reichsmarks and the new building cost 450,000 RM.

In 1933, the National Socialists forcibly took possession of the house. From November 1938 the German Reich acquired the building and from 1939 after renovations it was the headquarters of the Secret State Police (Gestapo).
After 1945 the American military government was housed here. In the 1950s the house was returned to the SPD, which was based here with the trade unions.

The North German Volksstimme first appeared in early 1890 shortly after the Socialist Act was repealed . The establishment of the newspaper by the SPD was prepared by its Reichstag deputy Julius Bruhns , who was also the publisher and editor of the SPD party newspaper Bremer Bürger-Zeitung . In February 1933 the publishing house was searched by the police and the newspaper was banned. Soon afterwards the editors Fritz Thiens and Gerhard van Heukelum as well as the managing director Hans Deifel were arrested. The newspaper appeared again in 1948 and was soon called Bremerhavener Volksstimme and then Bremerhavener Bürgerzeitung , which was discontinued in 1970.
Today there is a residential and office building here.
