Verona Confederation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Veronese League was a military alliance of the northern Italian cities of Verona , Padua and Vicenza under the leadership of Venice . The reason for the foundation of the league was the efforts of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa to curtail the power of the rich northern Italian cities and to strengthen his own position. From this claim, the third Italian campaign of Frederick I developed, as a result of which the Verona League was founded in 1164 . After Barbarossa first conquered Rome in 1167 , but then lost large parts of his army to an epidemic and had to retreat to the German part of the empire , the Italian cities resisting received a large influx. As a result, the Verona Confederation joined forces with the Lombard League of Cities , which pursued the same goals but was under the leadership of Milan . This union in 1167 is considered to be the actual founding date of the Lombard League of Cities.
