Veronica Mortensen (* around 1973 in Aarhus ) is a Danish jazz singer and songwriter .

Live and act

Mortensen's parents are the singers Titika and Allan Mortensen . From the age of twelve, she was raised by her mother in Athens. At the age of 20 she moved back to Denmark to study there. First she founded her own soul band; then she joined the acid jazz band Virtual Fantasy . She studied at Det Jyske Music Conservatory until 1996, before completing her diploma examination at Rytmisk Music Conservatory in 1998 .

Then she worked in musicals like A Tribute to the Blues Brothers , Another Brick in the Wall and Hair in Copenhagen and Paris. Her debut album Pieces in a Puzzle was released in 2003, followed by Happiness Is Not Included in 2007 . Both albums almost without exception contained their own songs and were positively rated by the critics and presented by Danmarks Radio as "album of the week".

Mortensen's third album I'm the Girl is a live recording with Klüver's Big Band and guests Dave Samuels and Dennis Mackrel . There she not only sings her own songs, but also interpretations of other well-known songs. The combo albums Catching Waves and Presents Passed followed in 2013 and 2015 . She toured Sweden several times with the Bohuslän Big Band. With the Klüvers Big Band, she interpreted the Sacred Concerts by Duke Ellington . As a singer, she also worked with the Peter Vuust Quartet ( Image of Falling , 2005; September Song , 2013). She has also performed in Estonia, at the Heineken Jazz Festival in Bangkok, the Beijing Jazz Festival and the Ladies Jazz Festival in Gdynia.

Prizes and awards

In 2007 the Danish Songwriters Association honored Mortensen's work as a songwriter with its award. The album September Song , recorded with the quartet by Peter Vuust, was nominated for the Danish Music Award in 2014 as "best Danish vocal jazz album ".
