The different colored geraniums or variables cranesbill ( Geranium versicolor ) is one of several species from the family of geraniaceae (Geraniaceae). He is at home in the northeastern Mediterranean region.
description
It is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of between 15 and 50 centimeters. The leaves are delicate, stand upright and have protruding, often lush hairs. The stem is thickened at the nodes .
The basal leaves are on a 6 to 12 cm long petiole , the blade is 7 to 9 cm long and 5 to 7 cm wide, five-fold pinnate and deeply serrated. The stem leaves have only a short petiole and are triply pinnate with two basal lobes.
The flowering period extends from June to August. The sepals are 3 millimeters long and 9 millimeters wide with a 1 to 2 millimeter long tip. The petals are white or pink and violet-like veined. The fruits are hairy achenes .
distribution
The species is native to the northeastern Mediterranean as well as central and southern Italy and Sicily in montane locations between 500 and 1400 meters. It inhabits chestnut and beech forests .
use
Like many geraniums, the different colored cranesbill is used as an ornamental plant. Two varieties are used: 'Album', a variety with white flowers and only light veins, and 'Snow White', a pure white variety.
