Incomplete track plan of the test track

The institute in Shcherbinka , south of Moscow, has been operating a ring-shaped test track six kilometers in length ( Lage ) since 1932 . All new locomotive series and freight cars were tested here during the Soviet Union . It is considered the oldest such test facility in the world. In the course of time, a test center with 15 laboratories was created.

The test track initially consisted of a circular track with a radius of 956 meters on level ground. In 1960 the facility was expanded. Today the test ring comprises three tracks: an outer ring 6,000 meters long on a level surface. It can be driven at up to 140 km / h. Two inner tracks of 5700 meters in length have different curves between 390 and 1250 meters in radius and slopes of up to 12 per thousand. Here you can drive at up to 90 km / h. The contact line voltage can alternatively be switched to 3,000 volts direct current or 25,000 volts / 50 Hertz alternating current .
