The Tlatelolco Treaty is an international treaty that prohibits the testing, stationing, possession and manufacture of nuclear weapons in the Caribbean and Latin America . It was signed on February 14, 1967 in Tlatelolco , a district of Mexico City , and came into force on April 22, 1968, initially between El Salvador and Mexico . It was the first treaty to declare an inhabited area to be a nuclear weapon-free zone , after the Antarctic Treaty had already established in 1961 that the Antarctic would remain free of nuclear weapons.

The treaty has now been ratified by all 33 states in Latin America and the Caribbean. The last state was Cuba on October 22nd, 2002. There are two additional protocols to the treaty. The first additional protocol concerns states that have overseas territories in the geographical area in which the treaty applies. It obliges these states to also comply with the provisions of the treaty in the areas concerned. The protocol has been ratified by the USA , Great Britain , the Netherlands and France and is therefore binding for them. The second additional protocol requires the nuclear-weapon states to respect the nuclear-weapon-free status of the treaty area. All five official nuclear weapon states, i.e. the USA, Great Britain, France, the People's Republic of China and Russia , have ratified the second additional protocol.

Alfonso García Robles and Alva Myrdal received the 1982 Nobel Peace Prize for their commitment to this contract .
