Treaty of Turin (1860)
The Treaty of Turin ( Italian Trattato di Torino , French Traité de Turin ) of March 24, 1860 confirmed the transfer of the county of Nice and the area of Savoy to France .
After the Plombières agreements in July 1858, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Sardinia, Camillo Benso von Cavour, promised the French Emperor Napoleon III. the cession of Savoy and Nice in exchange for its support for Italian unification policy. The proposal then became official through the Sardinian-French alliance treaty of December 1858. In this treaty, Sardinia was guaranteed French aid and France the surrender of Savoy and Nice.
After the jointly won Sardinian War , the Treaty of Turin became legally binding on March 24, 1860, with the consent of Sardinia, and the cession of the old areas of Savoy was confirmed in a referendum. At the same time, the Sardinian troops began to withdraw from Savoy and Nice. The contract was published on March 30th and April 1st; Victor Emmanuel II signed a notice to the residents of Nice and Savoy.
The referendum took place on 15./16. April in the county of Nice and on 22/23. April in Savoy. The official figures show very high percentages in favor of annexation to France in the French-populated areas (99.8% and 99.3% of the voters).
