Vesna Kesić (feminist)

Vesna Kesić (born April 20, 1948 - December 27, 2020 in Zagreb ) was a Yugoslav and Croatian journalist and feminist .

Life

Vesna Kesić studied psychology and sociology at the University of Zagreb . Since its participation in 1978 in Belgrade , held international feminist conference Drug-ca žena: Zensko pitanje - novi pristup? (Comrade Frau: Women’s question - a new approach?) She got involved in feminist organizations. Among other things, she was involved in the founding of the women section of the Croatian Sociological Society , which was the center of the social science discourse on this topic in Yugoslavia in the 1980s. In the 1980s she worked as a journalist for magazines such as Start ,Slobodna Dalmacija , Mladina and NIN .

In the 1990s she received her Masters degree from the New School for Social Research in New York City with a thesis on the construction of gender and ethnicity in the Yugoslav wars and their role in the emergence of violence. At the time, she mainly published in alternative media such as B. in ARKzin , the magazine of the anti-war movement in Zagreb.

In 2020, the documentary Ono drugo selo (This Other Village) was released and shown at the Liburnia Film Festival in Opatija , which she shot with Jadran Boban. This is about the village Španovica (formerly Novo Selo ) near Pakrac, which is predominantly inhabited by Serbs .

Vesna Kesić was chairwoman of the advisory board of the non-governmental organization Drugi korak - Centar za društvenu integraciju spolnih i rodnih manjina (The second step - Center for the social integration of sexual and gender-specific minorities).
