The Portuguese Presidency referred to the presidency of Portugal in the Council of Ministers of the EU for the first half of 2021. Portugal is the tenth trio of Germany continued. It is the fourth Portuguese Presidency. Overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic and the European Green Deal to overcome the climate crisis remain central topics . The crisis in the asylum policy of the European Union and the abolition of summer time have also not yet been resolved in the previous German Council Presidency.
Priorities of the Portuguese EU Presidency
Under the motto "Time to deliver: a fair, green and digital recovery", the Portuguese Presidency is setting the following priorities:
- "Promoting Europe's recovery, driven by the transitions in climate and digital"
- "Introduce the social pillar of the European Union as a key element for fair and inclusive change in the climate and the digital world"
- "Strengthen Europe's strategic autonomy and keep it open to the world"
Sponsors
In contrast to the previous German Council Presidency, the Portuguese Council Presidency is sponsored by companies. The three sponsors are Delta Cafés , SUMOL + COMPAL and The Navigator Company . After the announcement of the sponsors, Foodwatch called for a ban on sponsorship. The European Ombudsman, Emily O'Reilly, calls for a ban or regulation.
