The Veststraumen (Norwegian for West Current ) is a 68 km long glacier in Queen Maud Land, East Antarctica . It flows along the southern end of the Kraulberge to the Princess Martha Coast , where it flows into the Riiser Larsen Ice Shelf .
Aerial photographs that were taken on November 5, 1967 during a reconnaissance flight of the United States Navy with an LC 130 Hercules , were used by the United States Geological Survey for mapping. In 1969 the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the Glacier as Endurance Glacier , after the research vessel Endurance of the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton on the Endurance expedition (1914-1917). However, since a glacier on Elephant Island had already been named in this way, the name was adopted, which has been on maps of the Norwegian Polar Institute since 1972 .
