The VfR 08 Oberhausen (officially: Association for Lawn Sport 08 Oberhausen eV ) is a sports club from Oberhausen . The first soccer team played for three years in the highest amateur league in the Lower Rhine region.

history

The association was founded in 1908 as Germania Oberhausen . The club founders were members of the workers' sports communities Siegespalme and Prince Heinrich . In 1920 Germania merged with SC Preußen Frintrop to form VfR 08 Oberhausen. At the same time the VfR had to merge with the clubs Blau-Weiß Oberhausen and Sportklub 1919 Oberhausen . After the end of the Second World War , the again independent VfR merged with the SC 20 Oberhausen to form the FK 08 Oberhausen . The merger was resolved just a year later.

Soccer

The footballers of the VfR 08 made it into the 2nd district class Niederrhein in 1926 . Two years later, the team failed in the promotion round to the first-class 1st district class Niederrhein at VfB Speldorf and SV Rheinhausen . A year later, after a league reform, they were promoted to the second-class 1st district class , before VfR in 1930 rose to the now first-class Niederrhein district league. In the top division, Oberhausen did not get beyond the relegation battle and missed the Gauliga Niederrhein, newly introduced in 1933, by lengths.

The VfR played in the district class after the end of the war and became champions there in 1951. With this, the Oberhausen team rose to the state league , which at the time was the highest amateur league on the Lower Rhine. After three years of the national league, it went back down to the district class in 1954. The VfR 08 stayed there for 13 years before the team had to relegate to the district class in 1967. Three years later they were promoted again before the lawn athletes returned to the national league in 1974. There the VfR was runner-up behind the Sportfreunde Katernberg in 1976 , before the team had to relegate to the district league again in 1984.

Four years later, he was relegated to the district league A and in 1998 he moved to the district league B. After four years, he was promoted to the district league A, before the VfR made it to the district league in 2010. As bottom of the table, the lawn athletes went back down to the district league A in 2014.

Handball

The former handball department was able to celebrate successes in the youth field. The female B-youth first became West German champion in 1986 and took third place in the German championship that was subsequently played. Two years later, the women's team was promoted to the Niederrhein Association League. In 1995 the Oberhausen champions became champions and made it to the Oberliga Nordrhein. After numerous players withdrew for professional or family reasons and the offspring was missing, the department was closed in 2000.
