The Viadotto Rago is a motorway bridge on the Autostrada del Sole , more precisely the Autostrada A2 , in the town of Morano Calabro in the north of the province of Cosenza in the Italian region of Calabria .

It crosses a deeply carved side valley with pillars up to 150 m high, which were the highest in the world until 1979 when the Kochertal Bridge with 178 m high piers was opened.

description

The Viadotto Rago was built between 1968 and 1974 on behalf of ANAS according to the plans of Fabrizio de Miranda , Piero Moroli and Antonio Maffey. It consists of independent parallel bridge structures for the two directional lanes, which run at different heights. The structures are only connected to each other by the foundations of the pillars and concrete slabs in the lower part of the highest pillars.

The two bridges each have two lanes, which are delimited by guardrails , but neither shoulder lanes nor sidewalks, as the roadways and tunnels in front of and behind the bridge were widened as part of the renewal of the Autostrada A2, but not the girders of the Viadotto Rago, which has only been renovated and given a new asphalt surface.

The 399.09 m and 399.63 m long bridges consist of 5 holes, each with 4 reinforced concrete - pillars , the m up to 150, according to other data are up to 147 meters. The three middle openings have pillar spacing of 84.5 + 122 + 84.5 m.

The middle openings are each bridged by a 172 m long steel box girder with an orthotropic plate , the ends of which protrude beyond the pillars into the next openings. The pillars standing on the valley slopes have protruding pillar heads. The spaces between the cavity boxes and the piling headers are steel suspended beam closed, as well bridge prestressed -Einhängeträger the outermost openings, so that a Gerber carrier is formed from different materials.

The large hollow boxes were assembled in sections. First, short segments were lifted onto the heads of the high pillars with cranes and temporarily fixed there. The middle section corresponding to the distance between the pillars was then laid in two parts with three or six segments between the pillars. The longer part was raised along the pillar at one end. In its inclined position, the other end that remained on the ground was connected to the short part by a hinge. The longer part was raised further, at the same time the ends of both parts connected by the hinge were raised by ropes from the other pillar until both parts formed a sloping, continuous high box and were firmly connected to each other. Then the box girder was lifted in its inclined position between the pillars, brought into its final position and connected to the segments on the pier heads.
