Vibram is a trademark of the same Italian company headquartered in Albizzate ( Varese ) for abrasion resistant shoe soles made of rubber . Originally they were mainly used on mountain boots. More recently, they have been widely used in sports, hiking and winter shoes from many manufacturers.

In a mountain accident in 1935 on the Punta Rasica (3305 m) on the Swiss-Italian border, six climbers died because of unsuitable footwear. Vitale Bramani (1900–1970), also a mountaineer, took this as an opportunity and researched new shoes with rubber soles that should be more suitable for alpine terrain. Based on the Vulkanisierungstechnologie of Charles Goodyear Bramani and his friend developed Ettore Castiglione with tire manufacturer Pirelli the water and winterized rubber sole, which he 1937 Patent filed for and with the aid Bramani and Castiglione same year, the first ascent of the North West Face of Piz Badile succeeded . After 1945, the rubber soles were marketed with the Vibram company, whose name is made up of parts of Vitale Bramani's first and last name.

Vibram is an Italian branded product; Typical of the Vibram sole is the elongated, yellow logo that is attached between the heel and the front sole. There are now many different profiles of the Vibram sole. One of the current products are the soles for motorcyclists, in particular for the group of Super Moto -Rennfahrer which prevent the sliding away of the motorcycle by means of the abrasive on the floor foot.

In 2005 a shoe type came onto the market for the first time in which not only the sole, but the entire shoe is made by Vibram. The FiveFingers, whose characteristics are separate chambers for the individual toes , are designed as barefoot shoes and are now available in a wide range of products; Merrell's Glove range offers barefoot shoes with Vibram soles without separate toe chambers.
