Marco Volken

Marco Volken (born December 14, 1965 in Milan ) is a photographer, journalist and author of mountain books and alpine guides from Switzerland .

Life

Marco Volken spent his childhood and youth in Lugano . He studied physics at the ETH Zurich and graduated in 1989 with a diploma thesis at the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF in Davos. From 1990 he was an assistant at the Institute for Atmospheric Physics at ETH Zurich, where he received his doctorate in 1994.

In 1994 he founded the trekking agency per pedes bergferien with Remo Kundert , where he worked as a professional hiking guide in the Alpine region until 2004.

He has been active as a mountaineer since 1981, carried out several first and winter ascents in the Alpine region and in 1986 organized a small expedition to several peaks in the Caucasus . At the beginning of the 1990s he was one of the founding members of the Alpine protection movement Mountain Wilderness Switzerland. His current alpine interests are ski touring, alpine hiking, classic mountaineering and clean climbing at medium levels of difficulty. Marco Volken lives in Zurich .

Journalistic and photographic work

From 1993 he published journalistic and photographic works in the fields of mountains, landscape, nature, sport, tourism and reportage. He has been working full-time as a freelance photographer and text author since 2004, he is the author of numerous publications, illustrated books and non-fiction books. He also works on behalf of magazines, advertising and non-profit organizations. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions, and some of his pictures are in private collections.
