biography

Démé came to music through his mother, who was a griot . He grew up with his father in Abidjan , the then capital of the Ivory Coast . There he learned the trade of tailor and worked in his father's tailoring. Against his will, he appeared as a singer with various bands, including Abdoulaye Diabaté's band Super Mandé . In 1988 he returned to Ouagadougou, where he won several talent competitions and became a well-known singer. Most of the time, however, he did not sing his own compositions, but classics by well-known artists such as Salif Keïta .

In 2007 Démé founded his own label Chapa Blues Records and began recording his first album in an improvised studio. This was published in 2008 and received international attention. The British magazine Songlines voted it the best album of 2008. In France it reached number 76 in the charts.

Démé's music is a mixture of traditional mandinka music, pop , blues and Latin American rhythms .
