Víctor Emerson González Maertens (born February 26, 1922 in Santiago de Chile , † July 9, 2012 in Temuco ) was a Chilean MP and minister.

Life

He was born to Juan Bautista González del Canto and Katty Maertens Mueller .

After attending the German School and the Liceo de Hombres in Temuco, he studied law at the Universidad de Chile . In 1950 he became a lawyer and worked in Temuco and Santiago. He later held managerial positions in commercial enterprises, for example, he managed the Eros joint stock company and the El Escudo printing company, and advised the Caja de Colonización Agrícola .

Since 1942 he was a member of the Partido Democrático Nacional party , in whose youth and student group he was active and held functions. In 1957 he joined the Partido Demócrata Cristiano de Chile party . In the same year he was elected to the Chilean National Congress for the area 21 Temuco, Lautaro, Imperial, Pitrufquén y Villarrica . He was a member of the Finance Committee and in 1959 was a member of a parliamentary delegation that traveled to the United States .

In 1961 he was re-elected. He was a member of the Constitutional, Legislative and Judiciary Committee and served on the Agriculture Committee. On his initiative the law 14.289 goes back, which served to finance an airfield for Temuco. At the invitation of the US State Department , he traveled to the USA again in 1962.

Also in 1965 he succeeded in returning to Congress for the legislative period 1965-1969 and worked in the Committee on Labor and Social Affairs. In 1968, however, he resigned his mandate in order to enter the government of President Eduardo Frei Montalva on May 21, 1968 as Minister for Land and Settlements . He held this position until November 3, 1970.

For the 1973 to 1977 legislature, he succeeded in re-entering Congress in 1973 for District 21. He was a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Latin American Integration. However, the 1973 coup in Chile on September 11, 1973 led to the establishment of a dictatorship under Augusto Pinochet . The National Congress was dissolved on September 21, 1973, which ended the parliamentary work of Víctor González Maertens.

He later founded the real estate company Víctor González Maertens Limitada and was in the management of the Universidad Autónoma de Chile , founded in 1989 . He also worked temporarily as the Chilean consul in Berlin .

Víctor González Maertens was married three times. The first marriage resulted in three daughters.

Awards

The city of Temuco named him in 2008 Hijo Ilustre de Temuco (German Famous Son Temucos ).
