Victor Kolyvagin
Victor Kolyvagin ( Russian Виктор Александрович Колывагин ) is a Russian mathematician living in the USA, who deals with arithmetic algebraic geometry and number theory in his work.
Life
Kolyvagin received his PhD in 1981 from Moscow's Lomonosov University under Yuri Manin . He then worked at the Steklow Institute for Mathematics in Moscow until 1994 . In 1994 he became the JJ Sylvester Professor of Mathematics at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore , and in 2002 the first Mina Rees Professor of Mathematics at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York .
He is known for the Euler systems he introduced , which led to advances in the Iwasawa theory (new proofs of the main conjecture , originally proven by Barry Mazur and Andrew Wiles ) and the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer (BSD) conjecture . Kolyvagin himself considered modular elliptic curves (so-called Weil curves, which, however, according to current knowledge include all elliptic curves above the rational numbers), where he was able to achieve partial results with regard to the BSD conjectures.
In 1990 Kolyvagin received the Chebyshev Prize of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. In 1990 he was invited speaker at the International Mathematicians Congress in Kyōto ( On the Mordell-Weil group and the Shafarevich-Tate group of modular elliptic curves ).
