Viktor Wilhelm Russ (born May 28, 1840 in Vienna , † July 17, 1920 in Kranzlhofen near Velden am Wörther See ) was an Austrian transport specialist and politician.

Life

Russ studied law at the Charles University in Prague and was one of the co-founders of the reading room for German students . As a student he founded the Corps Austria together with other students . His political career began as a member of the Bohemian Landtag in 1870. Subsequently, he was a member of the Reichsrat from 1870 to 1900 and from 1907 a lifelong member of the Austrian manor house . In the 1880s he became a leading member of the United German Left. He fought against the Baden language regulation and was in favor of national delimitation of the language areas. He was a staunch opponent of the protective tariff movement . As a transport specialist, he advocated the nationalization of the railways and was also a special promoter of inland shipping . Through his many years of activity as President of the Austrian Northwest Steamship Company, he sustainably promoted Austria's interests in shipping on the Elbe. He was the first to suggest the establishment of a separate transport ministry in Austria. He was also the author of numerous articles on political and economic issues.

Russ was the stepfather of the economist Johann Löwenfeld-Russ .
