Victor von Plessen

Victor Baron von Plessen (born October 23, 1900 on Gut Sierhagen near Neustadt in Holstein ; † December 16, 1980 on Gut Wahlstorf near Preetz ) was a German explorer and ornithologist in Southeast Asia and came from the originally noble Mecklenburg-Holstein noble family von Plessen . He was an honorary knight of the Order of St. John .

Life

Victor Baron von Plessen studied art in Berlin and Munich in 1917/18 after his military service in the Regiment of the Gardes du Corps . In 1924/25 and 1927/28 he undertook his first expeditions in the Malay Archipelago. On his travels to Bali, he got to know and appreciate the German musician and artist Walter Spies , who had lived there since 1927 and supported him significantly in his research.

In 1930/31 he made the films Island of Demons in Bali and in 1934/35 The Headhunters of Borneo on Borneo . In 1937/38, accompanied by his wife Marie-Izabel, he made scientific films in Malaysia on behalf of the Ethnological Museum. The discovery of over 50 subspecies of birds, butterflies and other animal species, which after him have the addition plesseni , as well as the rediscovery of the white star ( Balistar ) go back to him.

After returning to Germany, he lived on the Wahlstorf estate near Preetz, which he inherited in 1938, and where his extensive collection of Asian artifacts is now located. A large part of his paintings - Plessen mainly painted Holstein and Indonesian landscapes - can be found there.

family

Victor von Plessen is a descendant of Christian Ludwig Scheel von Plessen . His parents were the feudal count Carl von Scheel-Plessen on Sierhagen and his wife Louise, nee. Countess von Scheel-Plessen (his parents were cousins). His maternal grandfather was the Holstein President Carl Graf von Scheel-Plessen . Victor Baron von Plessen married Marie-Izabel, born on November 30, 1934. von Jenisch, the daughter of the imperial German envoy and real secret councilor Dr. jur. Martin Rücker Freiherr von Jenisch and his wife Thyra Countess Grote . Victor and Marie-Izabell von Plessen had two daughters and a son. Elisabeth and Marie-Louise are his great nieces.
