family

Christian Ludwig Scheel von Plessen belonged to the noble family Plessen and was the son of court marshal Christian Siegfried von Plessen . After the marriage with Charlotte Amalie Skeel in 1702 and the connection of the Skeel parent houses Foussingoe and Selsoe, the name and coat of arms were merged with Scheel . Only the respective owners of the parent houses bore the name Scheel von Plessen , the others continued to use the name Plessen . The Skeel family is one of Denmark's ancient noble families.

Christian Ludwig Scheel von Plessen is the ancestor of the members of the Danish branch of the Plessen / Scheel von Plessen , father-in-law of the court lady Louise von Plessen and Birte Rosenkrantz . His daughter Berte Scheel von Plessen married the chief steward and privy councilor Christian Friedrich Raben , Count von Christiansholm.

A portrait of him is in Frederiksborg Castle .

Professional background

After studying in Kiel, for which he was matriculated in 1689 , Plessen became a canon at Aarhus in 1702 and served on the Konseil from 1725 to 1734. From 1730 he held the position of Danish finance minister with particular success. Like his brother Karl Adolf von Plessen , he was personally involved in trade with the West Indian colonies and was thus able to increase his property.

In 1728 he bought the Lindholm estate near Roskilde in an auction for 28,000 Reichstaler , where he had the main building built in the style of the time. He had the house in Glorup, which he inherited in 1723, rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1743/1744 by the French architect Philip de Lange (1700–1766).

On his Danish estates, which in addition to Lindholm and Glorup also included Foussingoe, Selsoe, Eskilsoe, Torpegaard, Holbaekgaard, Odden and Stensbaek, he was the first in Denmark to abolish serfdom , for which a memorial was erected in Foussingoe.
