Cattle salt

Salt lick on cow pasture

Livestock salt is the name for sodium chloride , which is used as a feed additive and salt lick for farm animals or game. The feed additive consists of ground rock salt or the more expensive vacuum salt . Salt lickstones are also pressed from this material, and massive lumps of rock salt are more rarely used for this purpose. Cattle salt is also sold with the addition of various other minerals.

In contrast to animal food, vegetable food contains more potassium than sodium compounds. Herbivores such as horses , sheep , cattle , roe deer and fallow deer therefore only take in little sodium with their food. Sodium chloride (table salt), however, promotes protein digestion in the animals and serves overall better physical development. It is very likely that this will also improve their wellbeing.

During the existence of the salt tax , cattle salt was exempt from it, which made officially monitored denaturation necessary. For this purpose were iron oxide , various dyes and Soda admitted.
