Alliance Diverse Democracy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Alliance for Diverse Democracy (own spelling) was founded in October 2015 on the initiative of the Bertelsmann Foundation as a "platform for collegial exchange on questions of citizen participation and democratic development with a focus on local and regional areas" .

Approach, purpose

Diverse democracy

Under the approach of diverse democracy , the alliance would like to contribute to "better constructive cooperation" of:

Citizen involvement / participation . To "strengthen democracy in Germany" , to "strengthen and activate the participation of citizens" . And thus "to increase the chance of jointly supported political solutions" .

The alliance would also like to advocate "more transparency about decision-making processes and participation opportunities" and "contribute to the development of participation skills in politics, administration [and] civil society" . To "an inclusive and broad participation of all population groups" and "to counteract the social division of our democracy" .

History, development

Individual democratic, participatory elements, instruments, procedures were initially considered individually, discussed, and also introduced - whether as direct democracy (also called immediate , direct ), focused on approaches to proposal and decision-making instruments (such as citizens '/ referendums, citizens' / Referendums in Germany), early forms of citizen participation , rights to transparency , freedom of information (at first, mere inspection of files upon application was a success), as deliberative , participatory democracy (and more).

In recent years they have increasingly been “coupled, combined, connected, linked, interlocked”. Gradually, a broader, more comprehensive approach of a “diverse democracy” is emerging , which (initially) connects the representative, direct and deliberative aspects with one another.

Concrete experiences of developed democracies, and the increasing exchange with them, could contribute to the fact that on the way to more direct democracy , more citizen participation , more deliberation - all components of direct democracy in the broader sense - a number of other direct democratic , closely interwoven, elements, Procedures and processes are also gradually being applied elsewhere.

network

The alliance is a non-commercial network of individuals coordinated by the Berlin Institute for Participation, sponsored by the German Environmental Foundation . As a voluntary association (as of 2019), it consists of around 200 actors from administration, politics and civil society organizations who are active at federal, state and municipal levels, in foundations, political parties or as academics and who campaign for the topic of civic participation.
