features

The multicolored tangar reaches a body length of about 13 centimeters. The birds are very brightly colored and essentially show the following plumage colors:

  • Head and neck: turquoise
  • Chest: light blue
  • Belly, control springs , arm and hand swing : cobalt blue
  • The rump , the rims of the wrist and the back of the body: Orange
  • Eye ring, beak base, throat, upper back and arm covers : black.

Legs and feet are gray. Overall, the sexes hardly differ in color.

Similar species

The seven-color tangar ( Tangara chilensis ), which is also very brightly colored, is darker in overall appearance. The three-colored tangerine ( Tangara seledon ) lacks the blue drawing elements , whereas greenish colors are predominant.

distribution and habitat

Multicolored tangars are found in a relatively small area in eastern Brazil , namely in the states of Paraíba , Pernambuco and Alagoas . They prefer to inhabit moist and swampy forests, including floodplain and highland forest. In the foothills they have been detected at altitudes of up to 1000 meters. There are also individual observations from other parts of Brazil. It is believed, however, that these are escaped cage birds.

Way of life

The birds feed on fruits and arthropods . Broodings were reported for the months October to March. Further details on the biology of the species are currently not available.

Hazard and protection

In its already small distribution areas, the multicolored tangar is in decline due to the reclamation of parts of its habitat. Another threat to the small populations is the attractiveness of the multi-colored birds that are illegally removed from the wild for cage. Accordingly, the species is classified as VU IUCN 3 1st svg" Vulnerable " by the World Conservation Organization ( IUCN ).
