Vietcong is a computer game series by the Czech developer Pterodon that uses the Vietnam War as a scenario. The games were designed in collaboration with Illusion Softworks and can be assigned to the genre of first-person shooters . They are distributed by the Gathering and 2K Games labels from the US publisher Take 2 Interactive . The title is derived from the Vietnamese fighters, who are often called " Viet Cong " in the USA and Western Europe .

According to the manufacturer, more than a million copies of the first game were sold worldwide.

The game developer Pterodon no longer exists, and the Czech developer studio Illusion Softworks has meanwhile been bought up by Take 2 Interaktiv, which comes from the USA, and renamed 2K Czech.

Vietcong

The player embodies US Sergeant First Class Steve R. Hawkins , who has to pass missions with a team of specialists from Camp NUI PEK (near the Cambodian border). In addition to this linear campaign, the game offers the possibility of playing single-player maps as well as in multiplayer mode with others via a local network or the Internet. Vietcong is based on the real historical data of the Vietnam War.

After the original game was released in April 2003, an official add-on called Fist Alpha , a Purple Haze called "Gold Edition" and a free add-on developed in 2005 called Red Dawn were also released in January 2004 . There are also a number of free mods , such as Rising Sun .

Purple Haze was converted for PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2004 by Coyote Developments .

The game principle corresponds to the usual first-person shooters: The character is controlled in the first-person view and several levels have to be mastered. These are mostly linear and rarely offer branching options. The player is on the road with other team members who act independently and support the player. If one of the team members dies, the level has failed.

The continuation Vietcong 2 was in October 2005 for Windows - PCs released. The game had higher hardware requirements than the graphically better Doom 3 . For example, a graphics card with Pixel Shader Version 2.0 was required.

Vietnam veterans who were stationed in the city of Hue during the Tet Offensive were consulted as eyewitnesses in order to make the game as historically correct as possible. The player takes on the role of a US captain who is to accompany a war reporter through the celebrations of the traditional New Year festival in Hue. At the end of the US campaign there is the option of playing the rather small Viet Cong campaign as a bonus.

In contrast to the first part, the first campaign does not take place in the jungle, but in urban areas. The game principle is the same as in the first part. One difference is the invulnerability of the team members, so that they are immortal.
