particularities | highest mountain of the Pirin |
The Wichren ( Bulgarian Вихрен ), located in the Pirin National Park , is the highest mountain in the Pirin Mountains and forms its northern flank. Characteristic are the white rock of the mountain and the more rugged ridges compared to the Rila .
The summit is easy to hike, at least when there is no snow. The closest place is Bansko , about 15 kilometers away. The 400 meter high north face of the summit is interesting for alpinism. The German mountaineers F. Auer and B. Mozel succeeded in their first ascent in 1934. In terms of the rock character, the routes on the wall are similar to the alpine routes in the Dolomites .
The mountain is named after the hut at its foot and Vihren Peak on Livingston Island in Antarctica.
