Viktor Dostal

Viktor Dostal (born February 4, 1924 in Mährisch Schönberg , Czechoslovakia ; † December 28, 2016 ) was an Austrian virologist who was involved in the development, manufacture and testing of the Salk poliomyelitis vaccine and in the eradication of smallpox with a newly developed, temperature-stable, lyophilized vaccine was involved (eradication program of the WHO ).

Dostal completed his medical studies in Marburg / Lahn . In 1951 he received his doctorate and specialized in virology , in particular the development of vaccines . From 1952 to 1957 Dostal worked as a senior assistant at Haas in the Behring works, then at the Institute for Microbiology and Hygiene at the University of Freiburg . In 1960 he took over the management of virus vaccines and virus diagnostics at the Swiss Serum and Vaccination Institute in Bern , where he and his team developed a new smallpox vaccine . From 1965 to 1970 he worked as a senior physician at the hygiene institute of the University of Graz and completed his habilitation in hygiene and microbiology . In 1969 he was appointed as a WHO advisor in the smallpox eradication program in Pakistan , Iraq , Lebanon , Jordan and Egypt . From 1970 to 1980 he headed the Tumor Virology Laboratory at the Cancer Research Institute of the University of Vienna and worked on the oncogenic significance of herpes viruses. In 1980 Dostal was appointed associate professor at the University of Vienna. In 1980 he became head of the State Serum Testing Institute for the testing of vaccines and blood derivatives. At the same time he worked in two expert groups of the European Pharmacopoeia in Strasbourg until 1988 .

In addition to awards from various universities, Viktor Dostal has been an honorary member of the Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology of the Association of Czech Doctors JE Purkinje since 2008 . In 1992 he founded the "Dostal Foundation / Dostalova Cena" in his birthplace Šumperk, which annually serves charitable purposes. It is organized by the mayor of the city.
