Viktor K. Prasanna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Viktor K. Prasanna , also VK Prasanna Kumar , (born August 10, 1956 in Mysore ) is an Indian-American computer engineer. He is a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Southern California (USC).

Prasanna received his bachelor's degree in electronics from Bangalore University in 1976 , his master's degree from the Indian Institute of Science (School of Automation) in 1978, worked as an engineer at Processor Systems Limited in India in 1978/79, and was at Pennsylvania State in 1983 University with Joseph Farid Jaja (Communication Complexity of Various VLSI Models). In 1983 he became Assistant Professor, 1989 Associate Professor and from 1994 Professor at the University of Southern California. He has held the Charles Lee Powell Chair in Electrical Engineering there since 2006 and is director of the Center for Energy Informatics (CEI).

In addition, he is Executive Director of the USC-Infosys Center for Advanced Software Technologies (CAST), a member of the Center for Applied Mathematical Sciences (CAMS) and the USC-Chevron Center of Excellence for Research and Academic Training on Interactive Smart Oilfield Technologies (CiSoft ).

He deals with high-performance computers, parallel computing and parallel architectures (VLSI systems), for example in image processing and computer vision, distributed computing, cloud computing , reconfigurable computing and intelligent energy systems. Among other things, he dealt with algorithmic optimization in systems with FPGAs ( Field Programmable Gate Arrays ) to accelerate performance and is the author of the parallel reconfigurable mesh interconnection architecture that is widely used in FPGAs . His inventions were used in the performance optimization of computer memories , cache- based signal processing and energy optimization of parallel computers .

In 2015 he received the W. Wallace McDowell Award for contributions to reconfigurable computing and he received the Okawa Foundation Research Award in 2005. He is a Fellow of the IEEE (1996), the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM, 2008) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science . From 2003 to 2006 he was editor of IEEE Transactions on Computers and is editor of the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing . Prasanna was a founding board member of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Parallel Processing and heads the governing body of the International Conference on High Performance Computing (HiPC) and is co-chair of the governing body of the International Parallel & Distributed Processing Symposium (IPDPS). In 2007 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Geneva.
