Life

Viktoria Belling was the daughter of Tom Belling (1843–1900), who created the figure of Stupid August and who had performed in the Renz circus for many years . At first she operated like her brothers Gobert, Tom jun. and Clemens, as well as her sister Ella in the circus as a rider, tightrope walker, juggler and trapeze artist. Frank Wedekind , who had seen her at the Herzog Circus in Zurich, immortalized her in a few poems. The two sisters are also said to be the role models for Luisa and Radina in Carl Hauptmann's “Tobias Bundschuh”. In 1889 she came to Vienna for the first time and made a guest appearance at the Ronacher Varieté , where she met the folk singer and comedian Josef Modl (1860–1915), whom she married in 1894. From 1904 she ran the Karlovy Vary Orpheum with her husband during the summer months . The two turned the declining establishment into an internationally respected company. After the death of her husband, she resigned the management and worked in various professions in the USA for several years. In 1930 she returned to Austria.

She died on September 7, 1942 in Vienna and was buried in the Evangelical Cemetery Vienna-Simmering (III, 95).
