The Villa Braunswerth (also Villa Engels ) is an industrialist's residence in Engelskirchen in the Bergisches Land and part of the Ermen & Engels ensemble , which includes the cotton mill and ancillary buildings, workers' houses and a church.

Building history

The Villa Braunswerth was completed in 1855 according to plans by the Barmer architect Christian Heyden in the classical style . The villa consists of a central building and two side wings, which are used as apartments for the Barmer manufacturer Friedrich Engels senior. (1796–1860) and his sons Emil and Hermann served. The reason was probably the simultaneous fundamental technical modernization of the hydropower-powered cotton spinning mill on the Agger, which had been in existence for a good decade .

Park

The park on the Agger was created at the same time as the villa by the Düsseldorf garden architect Joseph Clemens Weyhe . Blood beeches and lime trees come from the royal Prussian tree nursery in Meerbusch near Düsseldorf .

Usage history

Members of the Engels family lived in the villa until 1979. Today it is the seat of the Bergischer Waste Management Association (BAV) and occasionally also hosts art exhibitions.
