Petersmann Villa
The Villa Petersmann is a listed building in Leipzig's music district , Schwägrichenstraße 23.
History and description
The upper-class villa was built from 1888 to 1890 by Peter Dybwad (1859–1921) for the printer and publisher and bookseller Josef Mathias Petersmann (1864–1942). The original Dybwad villa was designed in the neo-renaissance style with echoes of the German renaissance. It exhibited an unusually rich architectural diversity with numerous gables with ornamental frameworks , bay windows , towers, verandas , terraces with sandstone reliefs and tracery parapets . Inside, the floors were structured differently from the basement to the top floor and tailored to the needs of the floor residents. On the first and second floors there was a central hall around which the individual rooms were grouped (see floor plans of the villa).
The villa with a large garden had a separate servants' entrance , stable building and coach house on the property. The Swiss-style coach house was also built by Dybwad in 1902. This is outwardly almost in its original condition.
On the other hand, the villa , which had fallen into disrepair in the GDR era, was partly changed considerably in its appearance in the course of the renovation in the 2000s - compared to the original. Bay windows and the facades, especially on the street front, have been smoothed so that hardly anything of the former splendor can be seen.
The villa of the architect Dybwad stood on the neighboring property. The Villa Dybwad, Ferdinand-Rhode-Straße 32, fell victim to the air raids on Leipzig during World War II .
