The Schulenburg house is a villa built by Henry van de Velde at 120 Street of Peace in Gera .

history

The villa was built between 1913 and 1915 as a house for the family of the Gera textile manufacturer Paul Schulenburg . Van de Velde was also responsible for the interior design and garden design. In 1919/20 the garden was expanded according to plans by Van de Velde's student Thilo Schoder .

After the death of Paul Schulenburg in 1937, the associated park was divided into several plots, so that today only a small part of the former garden has been preserved. There is the original of the statue Crouching Girl by Richard Engelmann , of which a copy exists in the courtyard of the old University of Freiburg im Breisgau .

After the expropriation of the villa in 1946, it was transferred from the city of Gera to the Medical College Dr. Salvador Allende rebuilt. In addition to the construction of a three-storey apartment block for sister students in the garden area to the west, profound changes were made to the spatial structure with the establishment of classrooms and sanitary facilities in the villa building. At the end of 1996 the Schulenburg house went into private ownership. Since 1997, the owners have initiated a comprehensive renovation and restoration of the main house, the outbuildings, the gatehouse and the gardens. Today the listed ensemble is used as the Henry van de Velde Museum and is the seat of the European Van de Velde Society. The historical ambience is also a place for weddings, concerts and readings and houses a cabaret. The newly designed villa garden was an accompanying project of the Federal Garden Show 2007 and is to be expanded to include a sculpture park after the dormitory building is demolished in 2013/2014.

Largely equipped with original furniture and the interior from the time it was built, the museum now houses the largest collection of book designs by van de Velde in Europe as well as the artist's drafts and publications. A collection of ceramics and furniture from the artistic environment of Henry van de Velde complete the collection. The owners received the Thuringian Monument Protection Prize in 2012 for the successfully completed, faithful renovation .
