Vimeo is a 2004 based video portal of the US company's Vimeo LLC , based originally in White Plains in New York State and is now at the Hudson River in Manhattan . It has supported streaming videos in HD since 2007 and in 4K Ultra HD since 2015 . In addition to the free use of the portal, it also offers the option of publishing paid content.

The name Vimeo comes from co-founder Jakob Lodwick and is an anagram of the English word movie (German: film ). He also plays with the words video and me (German: I ) and thereby emphasizes a relationship between the films and their owners.

In contrast to the competition, Vimeo mainly features artistically high-quality content such as music videos, short films and documentaries.

In autumn 2017, Vimeo acquired the provider Livestream in its largest takeover to date , in order to start its own livestream offer.

The portal also enables the creation of “personal streams” in which videos from other user profiles can be collected, commented on and rated.

Vimeo uses numerous structural elements from HTML5 to display pages in the browser . In addition, the portal's videos can also be received via the Apple TV set-top box .

privacy

In order to be able to use the portal's search function, the Google Analytics service had to work on the user's web browser by January 20, 2015 . This revealed one's own surfing behavior.
