Vinca's Kudirka
Vincas Kudirka (* December 19 July / December 31, 1858 greg. In Paežeriai , Suwałki Governorate , Russian Empire , today Vilkaviškis Rajongemeinde , Lithuania ; † November 4 July / November 16, 1899 greg. In Wladislawow , today Kudirkos Naumiestis , Lithuania) was a Lithuanian doctor, writer , poet , publicist, critic , translator, and journalist. As editor of the newspaper Varpas ("The Bell") and founder of the Varpininkai ("The Hunchbacks") movement, he was one of the ideologues of the Lithuanian popular movements in the 19th century. He made derogatory comments about the Jewish population.
Kudirka is the author of the national anthem ( Tautiška giesmė ). The town of Kudirkos Naumiestis ( Kudirkos is genitive of Kudirka ), Vincas-Kudirka-Platz in Vilnius and numerous high schools in Lithuania are named after him.
