Vincenzo Cerulli

Vincenzo Cerulli (born April 20, 1859 in Teramo , † May 30, 1927 in Merate ) was an Italian astronomer . Cerulli operated a private observatory in Teramo , where he discovered the asteroid (704) Interamnia in 1910 , which is one of the largest asteroids in the main belt with a diameter of 316 km .

Cerulli observed the planet Mars and came to the conclusion that the Martian channels observed by many astronomers are not real, but are based on an optical illusion . This was to come true later.

Together with Elia Millosevich , he put together a star catalog .

In Cerulli's honor, a Martian crater and in 2009 the asteroid (31028) Cerulli were named after him.
