Vincenzo La Barbera
Vincenzo La Barbera (* around 1577 in Termini Imerese , † around 1647 in Palermo ) was an architect and painter of mannerism in Sicily .
Training and early work
La Barbera was born in Termini Imerese, the son of Pietro La Barbera from Liguria and the Domenica de Michele. There he was also a student of Antonio Spatafora , who was the city architect of Termini Imerese from the end of the 16th century. In 1597 La Barbera married Elisabeta Spatafora, the daughter of his master. In 1609 the artist created frescoes with scenes from the history of Termini Imerese for the meeting room of the town hall there. After a contract dated August 25, 1609, he became the chief architect for the expansion of the Chiesa Madre in Caccamo .
At this time he was probably living temporarily in Palermo, as there is evidence of his work in various palaces. With Spatafora's death in 1613, La Barbera took over his workshop and the title of master builder in Termini Imerese. In this capacity he designed the church of Santa Croce al Monte della Compagnia dei Bianchi, as well as the monastery and church of San Marco Evangelista delle Clarisse.
Late work in Palermo
In 1622 La Barbera moved his workshop to Palermo. His contacts with the Genoese community and the Jesuits brought him numerous commissions, such as the furnishing for the celebrations for the canonization of Francesco Saverio and Ignatius of Loyola .
In collaboration with the architect Mariano Smiriglio , he worked at the Chiesa del Carmelo in Palermo in 1626 .
1637–1638 he painted together with Pietro Novelli , Giuseppe Costantino and Gerardo Astorino on the frescoes for the Sala Montalto in the Palazzo Reale . One of his students was Mariano Quaranta, who later married Agata La Barbera, the daughter of his teacher.
