Violet Oaklander

Violet Solomon Oakland (born April 1927 ) is an American Gestalt therapist , special and remedial teacher , as children, youth, family and marriage counselor in the Greater Los Angeles worked.

Life

Violet Oaklander was the daughter of the Russian-Jewish emigrants Mollie Filler Solomon and Joseph Solomon. She spent her childhood with two big brothers in Cambridge, Massachusetts . Her older brother died in World War II . Oaklander was badly burned from a pot of boiling water when he was five years old. She was saved by skin grafts , but had to be hospitalized for a long time.

She married Harold Oaklander and they have three children. Her son Michael became terminally ill and died after a year and a half of illness at the age of fourteen.

Oaklander began and successfully graduated as a teacher during their marriage. She worked for three years in a mainstream school context and six years with children with behavioral disorders in a special school program. At the same time, she obtained a diploma in “Special and Curative Education for Children with Emotional Disorders and Learning Disabilities”, for which she received a scholarship from the United States Office of Education .

Oaklander earned a diploma in marriage, family, and child counseling and a doctorate in psychology ( Ph.D. ). She attended advanced training courses in Gestalt therapy and was a member of the Gestalt Therapy Institute in Los Angeles. Her revised habilitation thesis was published in the USA in 1978 under the title Windows to Our Children and in 1989 in Germany. In her second book from 2006 she also documents and explains her play and gestalt therapy work with children and adolescents.

Until she was 73, she ran a state-approved private practice for marriage, family and child therapy in Hermosa Beach , where she also offered advanced training. In California , she also held various consulting and teaching positions - one of which was for life.

In 2003 the Violet Solomon Oaklander Foundation (VSOF) was founded.
