Vircolac is an Irish death metal band from Dublin that was formed in 2013.

history

As early as 2010, keyboardist and guitarist Jamie “JG” Grimes, drummer Colin “NH” Purcell and singer Darragh O'Laoghaire tried to found a project under a different name, but nothing developed from it. Vircolac was founded at the end of November 2013. The EP Codex Perfida was recorded in Sun Studios from September 26th to 28th, 2014 under the direction of Ola Ersfjord . The phonogram was released in the same year. In 2015 the band could be seen at the Redemption Festival . The following year, Sepulchral Voice Records and Dark Descent Records released the next EP under the name The Cursed Travails of the Demeter . In 2018 the group again took part in the Redemption Festival. In 2019, Sepulchral Voice Records and Dark Descent Records released their debut album Masque . Ola Ersfjord had been the producer again.

style

Nabu from hell-is-open.de assigned the group to Death Metal, whereby the sound of The Cursed Travails of the Demeter was dull. Also characteristic are "the driving beats in mid-tempo, the nasty growls and sometimes almost disharmonious riffing ". With 25 minutes, which are spread over four songs, the songs are atypically long. Sebastian Schilling from Rock Hard wrote in his review of The Cursed Travails of the Demeter that the EP no longer sounds so "noisy" compared to Codex Perfida . The Cursed Travails of the Demeter offers independent sounding "darkly blackened Death Metal". Sometimes you think of Grave Miasma , but rocky riffs and leads would give the songs independence. The sound of the songs is characterized by "moderately distorted guitars and faded leads". The vocals fluctuate between "nagging, growling and whispering". In a later issue, Mandy Malon described Masque as the death metal highlight of the month alongside the new Possessed album. In the songs, the group processed influences from classic death metal bands such as the early Morbid Angel and Obliteration as well as innovative ideas, but "without hurting the essence of it or wandering too far from the core". The band shines “between dissonant chaos and archaic atmosphere”, using targeted dynamic developments and tempo changes. Sometimes the band also use idiosyncratic or experimental song structures. In an interview with her, Brendan “BMC” McConnell stated that the production for Masque was based on the Slayer albums South of Heaven and Reign in Blood , on which the reverberation was completely reduced. Lyrically one addresses "the falsehood and the almost innate drive of humans to hide what is real, mostly as an act of deception". The album was heavily influenced by Irish history and folklore .
