Viscount Brackley , of Brackley in the County of Northampton , is a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded once in the Peerage of England and in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Awards

The title was first created on November 7, 1616 for Lord Chancellor Thomas Egerton, 1st Baron Ellesmere . This had already been given the subordinate title Baron Ellesmere , of Ellesmere in the County of Shrewsbury , on July 21, 1603 . His son, the 2nd Viscount, was also made Earl of Bridgewater in 1617 . The Viscountcy and the Barony were henceforth a subordinate title of the respective earl, until all three finally expired with the childless death of the 8th Earl on February 11, 1829.

In the second award, the title was created on July 6, 1846 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom for the House of Commons Lord Francis Egerton , as a subordinate title to the title of Earl of Ellesmere , which was also awarded. Egerton was the youngest son of George Leveson-Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland . Through his paternal grandmother he was a great-grandson of Scroop Egerton, 1st Duke of Bridgewater , and in 1833 had adopted his family name and coat of arms. His great-great-grandson, the 5th Earl , also inherited the title 6th Duke of Sutherland in 1963 . The Earldom and the Viscountcy have since been subordinate titles to the respective dukes.
