Earl of Albemarle
Earl of Albemarle (or Albermarle ) is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .
"Albemarle" is a variant of the name of the place Aumale (Latin Alba Marla ) in Normandy . The naming of the title refers explicitly to the local county of Aumale , which had belonged to France since the Hundred Years War , but like all of Normandy was still nominally claimed by the English crown.
The title was on February 10, 1697 by the English King Wilhelm III. created for his army commander from the Netherlands, Arnold van Keppel . Along with the earliest title , he was also in the Peerage of England, the subordinate titles Viscount Bury , in the County of Lancaster and Baron Ashford , of Ashford in the County of Kent , bestowed. The earl's apparent marriage was given the courtesy title Viscount Bury .
The current title holder is Rufus Keppel, 10th Earl of Albemarle , a great-great-great-great-grandson of the first Earl.
