Marquess of Aberdeen and Temair , in the County of Aberdeen , in the County of Meath and in the County of Argyll , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , named after the city of Aberdeen in Scotland and after Tara ( Old Irish : Temair ) in Ireland .

The Marquesses are members of the Gordon Clan . The family home of the Marquesses is Haddo House near Ellon in Aberdeenshire . The property has been owned by the Gordons since 1469 and the mansion, built in 1732, was given to the National Trust for Scotland in 1974.

Award

The title was created on January 4, 1916 for John Hamilton-Gordon, 7th Earl of Aberdeen , who was Governor General of Canada from 1893 to 1898 and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1886 and 1905 to 1915 . Together with the marquess he was, also in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, the subordinate title Earl of Haddo in the County of Aberdeen, bestowed.

In 1870 he had inherited the following subordinate titles from his father:

The eldest son of the respective title holder carries the title of courtesy Earl of Haddo as title heir ( heir apparent ) , the eldest son that of a Viscount Formartine .

The heir to the title is the son of the current marquess, Ivo Alexander Ninian Gordon, Earl of Haddo (* 2012).
