Archibald Victor Dudley Gordon, 5th Marquess of Aberdeen and Temair (* 9. July 1913 ; † 7. September 1984 ) was a British Broadcasting manager of the BBC , politicians , nobles and from 1974 until his death in 1984 a member of the House of Lords .

Life

Gordon was the second eldest son of Dudley Gordon, 3rd Marquess of Aberdeen and Temair , nephew of George Gordon, 2nd Marquess of Aberdeen and Temair and grandson of John Hamilton-Gordon, 1st Marquess of Aberdeen and Temair , who among others from 1893 until 1898 Governor General of Canada and for a few months in 1886 and later from 1905 to 1915 Viceroy of Ireland .

After attending Harrow School , one of the most famous public schools , he was assistant to the secretary of the Council for the Protection of Rural England between 1936 and 1940 and then moved to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in 1940 , where he initially worked in the control service. After the end of the Second World War , he worked in the talk show department of BBC Radio from 1946 to 1972, during which time he produced the political program The Week in Westminster and, between 1946 and 1966, BBC Radio's coverage of the political party conferences and the general election . Most recently, between 1967 and 1972, he was head of the talk and documentary section of BBC Radio.

After his older brother David Gordon, 4th Marquess of Aberdeen and Temair died on September 13, 1974 without biological children, he inherited the title of 5th Marquess of Aberdeen and Temair and the associated membership in the House of Lords. At the same time he also became heir to the subordinate titles of 5th Earl of Haddo, in the County of Aberdeen, 8th Viscount Gordon of Aberdeen, in the County of Aberdeen, 11th Viscount of Formartine, 13th Baronet Gordon, of Haddo, in the County Aberdeen, 11th Lord Haddo, Methlick, Tarves and Kellie, as well as 11th Earl of Aberdeen.

Since he died unmarried and without children, his younger brother Alastair Gordon followed him after his death on September 7, 1984 for the title of 6th Marquess of Aberdeen and Temair.
