Earl of Rosebery
Earl of Rosebery is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .
The Earls' family seat is Dalmeny House near Dalmeny in West Lothian and, until 1977, Mentmore Towers in Mentmore , Buckinghamshire .
Award, subordinate and other titles
The title was awarded on April 10, 1703 to Archibald Primrose, 1st Viscount of Rosebery , a long-time member of the Scottish Parliament and from 1707 of the House of Lords . Together with the Earldom he was awarded the subordinate titles Viscount of Inverkeithing and Lord Dalmeny and Primrose . He had been raised to Viscount of Rosebery and Lord Primrose and Dalmeny three years earlier, on April 1, 1700 . All named titles belong to the Peerage of Scotland and were awarded with the special note that if there are no male descendants, they can also be inherited in the female line.
The 4th Earl was awarded the title Baron Rosebery , of Rosebery in the County of Edinburgh on January 26, 1828 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
The 5th Earl served as Foreign Secretary, Lord Privy Seal , Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Lord President of the Council . On July 3, 1911, he was awarded the titles of Earl of Midlothian , Viscount Mentmore , of Mentmore in the County of Buckingham , and Baron Epsom , of Epsom in the County of Surrey in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
The eldest son of the respective earl usually carries the courtesy title of Lord Dalmeny as his prospective title heir ( Heir Apparent ) . The current earl instead used the courtesy title of Lord Primrose to avoid confusion with his half-brother Archibald Ronald Primrose, Lord Dalmeny , who died in 1931 .
