history

The company was founded in 1988 as a subsidiary of the family-owned Groupe PP Holding in Geneva, where the first optician's store was opened. As a result, Visilab expanded its business activities in western Switzerland by opening more stores. Visilab stands out from the competition because of its fast eyewear production. Each specialist shop has its own production laboratory integrated in the shop for the manufacture and processing of corrective lenses .

From 1994 onwards, the company expanded its business activities to include German-speaking Switzerland , and in 1999 also took over the Kochoptik optics business and in 2007 those of Grand Optical in Switzerland. The takeover of the latter took place against the transfer of 30% of the Visilab shares to the owner of Grand Optical, the GrandVision Group. This made GrandVision the company's second largest shareholder.

In the 2010s , Visilab developed a new strategy and began developing sales over the Internet. This strategy enabled Visilab to offer its customers new services in 2018 and, according to the company's management, also explains to a large extent why the company can continue to expand its market share in Switzerland even 30 years after it was founded. On September 1, 2017, GrandVision increased its stake in Visilab's share capital from 30 to 60%. GrandVision will become the majority shareholder and will increase its stake to 79% in 2019. However, the operational management of the company remains with the founding families. Visilab took over McOptic in 2019 . At the end of July 2019 it was announced that EssilorLuxottica intends to take over the shares of the HAL Group in GrandVision.
