Vito Maragioglio

Vito Maragioglio (* 1915 in Gropparello , † February 23, 1976 in Rapallo ) was an Italian Egyptologist and officer in the Italian army .

Life

Vito Maragioglio was born in Gropparello in 1915 to a Sicilian family . He served in the Italian army and rose to the rank of colonel in the artillery . For health reasons he had to leave the army in 1945. Since then he has concentrated on the studies of paleography and Egyptology . In 1946 he met Celeste Rinaldi , with whom he has carried out his most important research ever since. The two led a project to document the architecture of the pyramids in the Memphite region. Her books are still standard works on the architecture of the pyramids today. In addition, Maragioglio participated from 1961 to 1965 on behalf of the Museo Egizio in Turin in the rescue campaign of the Nubian monuments, which were threatened by the rising water from the construction of the Aswan Dam . He died in Rapallo on February 23, 1976 .
