The Vitter Bodden

The Vitter Bodden is a large lagoon , also called Bodden , between the northern part of the island of Hiddensee (with the peninsulas Neu- and Altbessin ) in the west and north and the peninsula Bug , Wieker Bodden and the northern part of the peninsula Schaprode in the east. In the north the bay borders on the Bay Libben on the open Baltic Sea and in the south on the Schaproder Bodden . It belongs to the West Rügen Bodden . The Bodden was named after Vitte , the main town on the Bodden on Hiddensee. The Bodden is part of the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park . The Vitter Bodden is consistently very flat (mostly less than 1.5 m), only the fairway and an area in the middle are over 2 meters deep. In the north-western part of the Bodden is very flat and ends in the Hahnentiefschaar , a windwatt before Hiddensee. Here the two peninsulas of Neubessin and Altbessin grow steadily southwards into the bay due to the sand masses removed from the north of the island.
