Viviane Wade

Viviane Wade (born September 13, 1932 in Besançon , France) is the wife of Abdoulaye Wade , the former President of Senegal . This made her the première dame of Senegal from 2000 to 2012 .

Life

Viviane Wade grew up in France as Viviane Vert . Her father was a professor of humanities and her mother came from an old family with real estate. While studying philosophy at the University of Besançon , she met Abdoulaye Wade in 1952, who was studying law here. They married in 1963 and settled in Senegal together. In October 1977 she opened a studio for women's fashion and home textiles in Pikine , the fast-growing suburb of Dakar, with little start-up capital, the products of which sold very well, so that she was soon able to rent a large house and convert it into a workshop with two or three employees.

Her husband had been an opposition leader since 1974 and was eventually elected president of the country in 2000. They have two children, son Karim Wade and daughter Sindjely Wade. Although her husband is a Muslim, Viviane Wade remained Catholic .

Viviane Wade is mentioned in the annual reports from 2009 to 2011 as patroness of the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF). In addition, she chaired the 2007 Dakar expert conference “The Health of African Athlete”. At that time she was also President of the Education Santé organization.

She received an honorary doctorate from the University of Minnesota for her social commitment.
